Notes: When I wrote this song, I was dealing with regret, depression, and death. This song was written after my neighbor and long-term friend/brother Tay died. I wanted to make a point of living for those who could not. This song clearly has some influence from Pink Floyd’s “Time”, which has always intrigued and haunted me.
lyrics
You Can’t Start The Race Again
“Sometimes I look back, over the years,
And I wonder why I didn’t do more, wondered why I caused so many tears,”
I said in shame, with a slightly dropped head,
To my dying friend in his hospital bed,
And he said…
(chorus)
You can’t start the race again (X7)
So, run now, while you can
(chorus)
It was later that week, that we buried him deep,
I should have been there more for you man. Did I really need to sleep?
And I fell down and wept, out in the street,
Till an old man reached out his hand and brought me to my feet.
And he said…
(chorus)
I could’ve been nicer to the people around me,
I could’ve denied my anxieties, stepped up, utilized my creativity,
I need to let the past passed, go ahead, soldier on,
Not live in the night’s darkness, but embrace the light of the coming dawn,
What my friend and that man said became clear,
I need to move on after the tears,
I need to live my life without fear,
I need to show respect for my peers,
I need to live for those who aren’t here,
I need to strive for a life’s that’s pure,
I need to live every second, minute, and year,
So, I looked at my face in the mirror,
I said…
(Chorus)
